Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Sichuan. The Tangtang Fm was named by Hu Yanji in 1980 and the type section is at Yuejingou, Tangtang Town, Huidong County, Sichuan Province. Lowermost formation in the Huili Gr.

Synonym: (淌塘组) ; Shuangshuijing Fm and Lanba Fm are thought to be the synonyms of the formation.


Lithology and Thickness

The Tangtang Fm is composed of dark-grey, grey-black sericite phyllite, carbonaceous sericite phyllite, chlorite sericite phyllite. Sometimes the base consists of metamorphosed siltstone and ferruginous sandy conglomerate. Locally the phyllite is intercalated with metamorphosed intermediate-basic volcanic rock, volcaniclastic rock and dolomite lenses. The formation is over 3000 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base is in conformable contact with the underlying Tong'an Fm

Upper contact

The top is conformably overlain by the Limahe Fm

Regional extent

Southernmost Sichuan. The formation is distributed mainly in Huidong, Huili and Tongan counties, Sichuan Province.

Fossils

Both the phyllite and slate have rich microplants, the main taxa are Asperatopsophosphaera, Pseudozonosphaera, Trachysphaeridium, Leiopsophosphaera, Lophotriletes, Protoleiosphaeridium.
